“Affordability is the Biggest Fight Right Now”: A Security Officer Responds to Trump’s Claims that Affordability is a Myth

January 9, 2026

When Donald Trump claimed that “people don’t care about affordability,” Tyrone Patterson, a Philadelphia security officer, took to social media to set the record straight.

“I don't find that to be true at all,” Patterson said. “Affordability means a lot to people out here nowadays. I think that's the biggest fight right now.”“Milk is high. Meat is high. Room and board is high,” he explained.  “To neutralize that, you're going to have to pay your workers a little bit more.” Otherwise, he said “you're in bad shape. You got to balance it out. It's like a scale.”Security officers like Patterson know firsthand that costs continue to skyrocket while pay remains the same. They are forced to do more with less, all while continuing to protect hospitals, office buildings, transit systems, and major entertainment events. Meanwhile, corporate executives and big businesses continue to thrive.“Big businesses are doing good. They’re making money hand over fist,” Patterson said, pointing to reports of CEOs earning tens of millions of dollars a year. “They're just robbing the country. That's what I think.”A recent report by the Center for American Progress supports his claim, finding that wages for security officers have remained stagnant for years. Many security officers work full-time jobs and are still unable to afford basic necessities.Security officers know affordability is real. They live it. That’s why they’re organizing, bargaining, and speaking out to raise standards across the industry.Make sure to check out Tyrone Patterson’s full post here!
