Security officers nationwide protect many premier, multimillion dollar office buildings, some of the nation’s finest higher education institutions, and many high profile financial institutions. Despite protecting that wealth, too many officers receive low wages, lack affordable health care and receive minimal training.
Concrete steps must be taken to lower the turnover rate, which some industry experts estimate at between 100 percent to 300 percent nationwide, and to increase the professionalism and emergency preparedness of private security personnel who guard commercial properties in cities across the country.
In order to achieve these goals, security officers in Boston are joining with officers in Washington D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, and dozens of other cities in an historic, nationwide effort to organize more than 200,000 security officers protecting lives and billion dollar properties in those cities. It is the largest organizing effort by a predominantly African American workforce in the history of the labor movement.
A strong coalition of community supporters, religious and elected leaders is beginning to work together to unite around security officers’ issues in order to win justice for these workers and to bring new economic opportunities to our community.
Join the fight to help security officers:
- Win respect for the profession.
- Secure living wages, family heath insurance and other benefits that will attract and retain good officers.
- Speak out on behalf of those who use security services.
- Have a voice in decisions that affect security wherever we work.
